Deserving midwife has dream holiday thanks to free laser eye surgery

A 45-year-old midwife from Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham can now go on her dream summer holiday thanks to receiving 20|20 vision.

Dipika, applied for Optical Express’ Thanks a Million campaign which rewards deserving NHS and emergency service workers with free eye surgery. She has now been able to book a dream holiday to Gran Canaria as worries about costs of new glasses and the pain from contact lenses become a thing of the past.

The surgery and holiday couldn’t have come at a better time as for the last five years, Dipika has worked as a midwife at the busy Hartland’s Hospital, Birmingham working up to 12 hours a day.

Dipika had a complicated prescription meaning her glasses are often costly, making it difficult for her to enjoy life with a depleted disposable income.

Before the surgery, she would also struggle wearing contact lenses on the ward and can recall moments in emergency situations where she had to deal with the sheer discomfort of her contact lenses irritating her eyes whilst managing a hectic medical situation.

Commenting on her new 20|20 vision, Dipika said: “I am so excited to have been given a fresh outlook by Optical Express and it’s great that I can finally go on a beach holiday and not worry about sand and dirt entering my eyes.

“I cannot believe how easy, painless and quick the surgery was and I am looking forward to the savings this will make to myself and my young family.”

Dawn, Head of People at Optical Express, said: “We are delighted to hear the impact laser eye surgery has had on Dipika’s working and personal life. Not only will Dipika be able to enjoy visual freedom without the use of her glasses and contact lenses, she has also done her part to help the environment. Daily disposable contact lenses are not biodegradable and are commonly made from hydrogel, silicone hydrogel, or on-hydrogel variants which are having a significant negative impact on the environment.  Laser eye surgery is an alternative option to vastly reduce waste caused by these single-use plastics.

As a nation we all share a great sense of pride in our emergency services, and the British public told us that they believe these amazing men and women deserve the most thanks – and we wholeheartedly agree.

“We wanted to reward them in our own special way by providing free treatment, to help improve the lives of these everyday heroes. Over the coming months our goal is to offer some of the hardest working people the freedom of having better than 20|20 vision, without the barrier of their glasses or contact lenses.

“We’re delighted to have given so many deserving people free laser eye surgery through the Thanks a Million campaign, and we are looking forward to continuing to improve lives.

Optical Express launched its Thanks a Million campaign, offering NHS workers free laser eye surgery. The initiative followed a national survey of 2,000 Brits commissioned by Optical Express, which found that people who dedicate their lives to public service 'are most deserving of our thanks'.
