NASA technology used in Johnson & Johnson Vison iDesign Refractive Studio

Thanks to new advanced technology developed by NASA, humanity will soon be able to view some of the first stars in the universe through The James Webb Space Telescope.  NASA has been developing this technology for decades in an effort to expand our knowledge and vision of space.

Not only has the James Webb technology opened up a new era of discovery in space, laser eye surgery patients across the world have benefited from the early research from the telescopes design. Part of the unique and innovative workings of the telescope known as ‘Webb’s Mirrors’ have been incorporated into the ground-breaking Johnson & Johnsons Vision iDesign machinery.

iDesign, available at Optical Express, is a highly innovative system which, through capturing over 1,200 microscopic eye imperfections, creates a detailed 3D map of the eye described as “An optical fingerprint unique to each patient’s eye.”[1] Webb’s development of the enormous and powerful mirrors used within the space telescope can capture bits of light from more than 13 billion years ago. This technology included within the iDesign system allows surgeons to carry out laser eye surgery procedures to a point that is twenty-five times more accurate than a standard prescription of glasses or contact lenses.

Not only does this state of the art technology allow our surgeons to treat patients with a stronger prescription than ever before, this innovation has also opened up treatment to more complex cases than were previously treatable. Many patients who, in the past, may have been told they are unsuitable for surgery can now be treated thanks to this development in technology.

Since its introduction, the iDesign technology has produced over 18 million successful LASIK procedures worldwide.[1] Optical Express are proud to have this renowned iDesign technology available in all of our, over 100, clinics across the UK and Ireland. This ensures we can offer our patients highly specific treatment, customised to the exact specifications of their eye for both LASEK and LASIK eye surgery, with over 99% of patients achieving 20/20 vision or better following treatment.[2]

If you would like to find out if you are suitable for iDesign laser eye surgery at Optical Express, book a free consultation today at your nearest Optical Express clinic where our team of experts can assess your suitability for treatment. Thanks to this advancement in technology, over 85% of people are now eligible for laser eye surgery, even if they have previously been turned down for treatment.[3]

[2] In a study of 190,231 Optical Express patients with the most common prescriptions we treat (excluding those with presbyopia and emmetropia), 99.2% achieved 20/20 vision or better following treatment.

[3] Based on 57,346 consultations attended at Optical Express between 1st January 2017 and 31st December 2017, 85.2% of patients were found to be suitable for a refractive procedure.
