Healthcare Improvement Scotland has rated all Optical Express’s surgery clinics in Scotland as Exceptional following inspections earlier this year. The Optical Express clinics in Glasgow, Aberdeen, Inverness and Dundee offer a range of services to patients including laser eye surgery, cataract surgery and lens replacement. Each of the clinics were awarded Exceptional ratings by the Scottish regulator.
During the inspections, Healthcare Improvement Scotland spoke to staff, managers and patients and observed the clinics in practise. Of the three criteria rated, each of the clinics received two ‘Exceptional’ grades and one ‘Good’. The inspectors were particularly impressed by the way the teams involve carers and families in patients’ care, and the excellent service offered to people. The leadership of the clinics was also praised, with the inspectors finding that ‘a clearly defined leadership structure and a robust governance framework helped deliver safe, evidenced-based and patient-centred care.’
Speaking following the publication of the inspection report, Optical Express Clinical Services Director Stephen Hannan said:
“These Exceptional ratings are a testament to the hard work and dedication shown by our clinical teams. I’m really pleased that colleagues are being recognised in this way by the regulator. At Optical Express, we’re hugely proud of the continual improvement that is being delivered across our clinics nationwide. This vote of confidence in our Scottish clinics backs up our conviction that our clinics have the potential to deliver even more services to communities across the UK.”
Optical Express surgeon and UK Medical Director David Teenan said:
“It’s a pleasure to work alongside the exceptional Optical Express teams in Glasgow, Aberdeen, Inverness and Dundee, and this inspection rating spells out just how high quality the service is. Of course, we’re constantly working to improve patients’ experience, and there are areas where we know we can still do better, but it’s fantastic that the work we’ve done so far is being acknowledged.”
Glasgow Clinic Director, Kirsty Batchelor said:
“I want to thank every one of the team members at the Optical Express clinics in Scotland for the energy and enthusiasm they’ve all shown in achieving these Exceptional ratings. I’m proud to be part of a team that is modelling best practice, and I know that our patients are grateful for the first rate service and outcomes they receive.”
A spokesperson for Healthcare Improvement Scotland said:
“Healthcare Improvement Scotland recently carried out inspections of the Optical Express clinics in Glasgow, Aberdeen, Inverness and Dundee, and published our inspection reports. The clinics provide laser vision correction procedures and are registered by us to provide surgical treatments. The inspections were positive and resulted in no requirements or recommendations for improvement.
“Independent clinics run by healthcare professionals in Scotland are required by law to register with Healthcare Improvement Scotland. The registration process is stringent and there are strict requirements which clinics must meet in order to complete the process. When a clinic is registered, it is also then subject to regular inspection, which helps clinics to demonstrate that they are maintaining high standards of care.”
