Former Director of Coaching for UK Athletics and Chair of Global Athletics Coaching Academy, Lens Replacement Surgery PatientJanuary 2024
“As a coach, it’s my job to take people from who they are to who they’re capable of becoming. And how are you going to do that if you can’t see where you’re going?” Frank Dick OBE, former Director of Coaching for UK Athletics and Chair of Global Athletics Coaching Academy, was inspired to seek out vision correction and give himself and the athletes he coaches the opportunity to keep reaching new heights.
Realising he couldn’t read the all-important scoreboard when attending a football game, Frank reached out to a friend, Chairman and CEO of Optical Express David Moulsdale, seeking advice from “one of the finest optical services in the world.” That advice lead him down the path of lens replacement surgery and into a clearer, vibrant world.
Frank was not claiming immunity to nerves, but instead complimented the team’s ability to reshape his priorities: “It was as if they’d made an art form out of keeping you calm and let you feel confident about what was happening and the people around about you.
The procedure was over in a blink (or a modest 7-minutes per eye) and Frank, after a brief recovery, was liberated from poor sight and traditional vision correction.
“It’s as if you’ve been looking through a lace curtain for a long time and someone has pulled the lace curtain back and suddenly your world is changed.”
In the arena of athletics, Frank highlights that not only would he highly recommend the procedure to coaches, but athletes and players looking to elevate their performance.
When he is not busy promoting the growth of people, he is passionate about doing so for the plants in his garden. Frank was thrilled that colours had a vibrancy they had lacked prior:
“The wonderful bit was I could see colours better than I ever seen them, I think, in my life before. And I rejoiced in that because I love my garden, I have to say. I love the colours in the garden, and they were so much more radiant than I’d ever seen before.”
Frank is no stranger to shaping challenges into championship. His decision to undergo vision correction surgery is testament to his proactive attitude, as well as his ability to push boundaries and actively seek success.
Whether it's on the track, in the boardroom, or among the blossoms of his garden, Frank Dick OBE continues to shine brightly as a beacon of leadership and vision.
