Retinal vein occlusion is a common cause of sudden vision loss, usually in older people. It can cause severe damage to your eye and even blindness in some cases.

Retinal vein occlusion happens when veins in the retina— the part of your eye that converts light rays to electrical signals, become blocked. This means that blood cannot drain away, causing it to leak into the retina. This causes vision loss.
